Dionisio Pinzon is a small town peasant.
One day he discovers an injured fighting rooster, whom he names The Golden Rooster. He nurses the rooster back to health.
The recovered Golden Rooster wins again and again at cockfights.
One evening he is held spellbound by the singer at
the fair, Bernarda, also known as La Caponera, a striking-looking woman whose lover, Lorenzo Benavides, is the most powerful
gambler in the area. She and Benavides convince him to work as a cardshark.
Later La Caponera seduces Pinzon...
