A cloud of tragedy darkens the household
of millionaire Eliseo: his beloved daughter Marisela has been diagnosed with an incurable illness. In the year that she has
left, Merisela gets pregnant, and dies giving birth to her baby daughter. Eliseo’s second wife, Victoria, is a widow
with two sons, Anibal and Rodolfo, who happen to be identical twins. Victoria sees the newborn as a direct threat to her favorite
son Anibal’s inheritance, and luck seems to favor her when a circus rolls into town and word reaches her that the gypsy
fortune teller, Sabina, has given birth to a stillborn child. Victoria switches the babies, and the only man who could denounce
her, Delfin, is killed in an accident.
The years go by, and Rodolfo, who has grown up to be a kind, decent man - quite
the opposite of his self-absorbed brother Anibal - is led by fate to the circus, where he meets the gypsy’s daughter
Peregrina, a beautiful dancer who is the living image of Marisela. Rodolfo and Peregrina fall in love, yet knowing that her
amazing resemblance to his stepfather’s late daughter would only cause his mother to hate her, Rodolfo decides to travel
abroad and try to forget her. When Peregrina shows up at Eliseo’s residence looking for Rodolfo, she meets Angelica,
her real mother’s sister, who immediately takes to her because she reminds her of Marisela.
Soon after, Peregrina
has an accident and Eliseo opens up his home to her. Fully aware of the girl’s true identity, Victoria, seething in
fury, tells Anibal her secret. Anibal seizes on Rodolfo’s prolonged absence and, passing himself off as the man Peregrina
fell in love with, proposes to her. It is not until their honeymoon that Peregrina realizes that she has been used, and that
Anibal and his mistress Abigail have orchestrated this marriage to get their hands on Eliseo’s fortune. During a heated
argument, Abigail accidentally kills Anibal, and Peregrina, who goes into shock, is blamed for the murder.
Upon Rodolfo’s
return, Peregrina must confront the only man she has ever loved, whose passionate feelings for her have now turned to hatred
and burning desire for revenge.
